The Glue and the Backbone

Tuesday was American Associations Day, a day to celebrate and recognize the contributions of associations.

It’s been said that associations are the hidden glue of our society and economy. So true. But when I think about the 1.6 million people in the U.S. who are employed by associations, it reminds me about the volunteers who are the backbone of associations – clearly they are at AAIA.

Thirty percent of all people who volunteer do so through an association. More than 63 million volunteers donate nearly 15 million hours, the equivalent of nearly 9 million full-time employees with equivalent wages of $278 billion.

Remember comedian George Carlin?  He said, “We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years.”

Our volunteers add life.
